Anvers, 2e ville de Belgique, et sa légende – car c’en est une ! – : l’origine du nom de la cité flamande. Jusqu’au XVIIème siècle, on écrivait HANTWERPEN (devenue ANTWERPEN) / Antwerp, the second largest city in Belgium , and its legend : The origin of the name of the Flemish city. Until the seventeenth century, wrote HANTWERPEN (now ANTWERP )
Selon cette légende, le passage de l’Escaut était au début de notre ère sous le joug d’un géant, Druoon Antigoon, qui collectait un droit de passage très lourd sur les bateaux qui passaient et coupait la main de ceux qui refusaient de payer. Cet horrible usage prit fin lorsqu’un soldat romain, Silvius Brabo, dans un acte de témérité, tua le géant, lui coupa la main et la jeta dans l’Escaut. D’où le nom (Hand = main, werpen = jeter). Voilà pour la légende. / According to this legend , the passage of the Scheldt was at the beginning of our era under the yoke of a giant, Druoon Antigoon , who collected a heavy toll on the passing boats and cut the hands of those who refused to pay . This horrible usage ended when the Roman soldier , Silvius Brabo , in an act of temerity , killed the giant, cut off his hand and threw it into the river Scheldt . Hence the name (Hand = hand werpen = throw ) . That’s the legend.
Plus probablement, Anvers doit son nom à une avancée (un ‘aanwerp’ en vieux néerlandais), un terrain surélevé et ensablé sur l’Escaut, à hauteur du Steen, où s’établirent les premiers habitants et qui disparut à la fin du XIXe siècle lorsque les quais de l’Escaut furent alignés. / More likely, Antwerp owes its name to an advanced ( a ‘ aanwerp ‘ in old Dutch ) , high ground and sanded on the Scheldt , up to the Steen, where the first inhabitants settled and disappeared in the late nineteenth century when the Scheldt quays were aligned.
Même si l’histoire de Brabo est entièrement inventée, les sinjoren (les habitants d’Anvers) ont voulu rendre hommage à leur légendaire ‘sauveur’ en installant une sculpture en son honneur sur la Grand-Place. La fontaine en bronze (1887) est du sculpteur anversois Jef Lambeaux / Although the history of Brabo is entirely invented , the sinjoren ( Antwerp residents ) wanted to pay tribute to their legendary ‘ savior ‘ by installing a sculpture in his honor on the Grand Place. The bronze fountain (1887 ) is the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux .
